In this video Dr Devang Patel goes through the reasons that make understanding occlusion fundamental for general dentists, and covers the difference between function and dysfunction in relation to occlusion. Dr Devang Patel discusses why occlusion is so confusing, and illustrates the benefits associated with understanding occlusion.

Duration: 24 min

Lesson 3 - Understanding Various Terminologies of Occlusion and Making it Clear

In this video Dr. Patel will go through various definitions, such as Centric relation or Retruded axis position (RAP), centric occlusion (CO) or Retruded contact position (RAP) and more. Dr Patel will shed some light on the confusion related to each term and promote their understanding. Concepts of curve of Spee and curve of Wilson, and different types of occlusion will be covered. The aim of this video lecture is to provide fundamental basis for the understanding of occlusion.

Duration: 58 min

Lesson 4 - Demonstration of Comprehensive Occlusal Examination

In this video Dr Devang Patel goes through the entire occlusal examination protocol. TMJ and muscles of mastication assessment, anterior determinants - such as protrusive guidance and lateral guidance - evaluation, non-working side contacts/interferences identification and assessment. Evaluating first point of contact using bimanual manipulation and leaf gauge. Dr Patel also discusses signs and symptoms of occlusal disharmony. This theoretical module is supported by a practical complimentary video.

Duration: 58 min

Lesson 5 - Application of Occlusion in Treatment Planning

A deeper knowledge of occlusion can help general dentists in various disciplines, in simple as well as complex cases. In this video Dr Devang Patel will go through various treatment planning scenarios where understanding of occlusion plays a crucial role (such as diagnosing issues with various structural failures, importance of first point of contact (CO) in planning treatment, planning of long-term stability etc). Differences between conformative and reorganised approaches to treatment planning and criteria of election will be thoroughly discussed.

Duration: 35 min

Lesson 6 - Application of Occlusion in General Dental Practice

Worldwide, 9 dentists out of 10 classify as general dentists and, as occlusion affects every single clinical scenario, it is very important to understand its application in general dental practice. In this video Dr Devang Patel will go through a detailed step by step protocol for direct or indirect simple restoration fitting in general dentist practice. It will be discussed the treatment planning of the cases with collapsed posterior bite and teeth with first point of contact (CO) and issues related to treating such teeth. He will also discuss the importance of canine guidance and how to change guidance without increasing the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD). This video is a must for every dental professional who wants to implement the knowledge of occlusion in general practice.

Duration: 35 min

Lesson 7 - Advanced Application of Knowledge of Occlusion such as in Full Mouth Reconstruction

A deep understanding of occlusion principles is mandatory when planning smile design, full mouth reconstructions and full mouth implant restorations. In this video Dr. Devang Patel will go through simple and complex dental wear cases, treated using adhesive and conventional techniques. It will also answer some of the questions which were raised at the beginning of the video series.

Duration: 23 min

Lesson 8 - Occlusion and TMD – Function vs Dysfunction

Understanding normal TMJ anatomy and function vs abnormal TMJ and its dysfunction is fundamental to correctly identify, evaluate and treat temporomandibular disorders. Dr. Devang Patel describes the anatomy of TMJ and the function of the muscles involved in the mastication, the articular disc and its connection with the masticatory muscles. The lecture comprises and analysis of TMD aetiology of and factors associated with TMD.

Duration: 21 min

Lesson 9 - Occlusion and TMD - Examination

TMJ assessment is crucial to successfully diagnose temporomandibular disorders and identify risk factors. In this video Dr. Devang Patel will discuss in detail the key role played by the diagnostic tests available for complete assessment of TMJ pathogenesis. Dr Devang Patel will also discuss the difference between intracapsular and masticatory muscle disorders, and 7 key factors in making differential diagnosis between the two disorders.

Duration: 16 min

Lesson 10 - Differential Diagnosis in TMD

In this video lecture Dr Devang Patel will present the the TMD classification and describe the clinical signs and symptoms of each disorder. TMD are divided into masticatory muscle disorders and Intracapsular disorders.

Duration: 25 min

Lesson 11 - Treatment Planning for TMD in General Dental Practice

Dr Devang Patel goes through some simple treatment modalities suitable for general dental offices and clinics. Treatment of masticatory muscle disorders and intracapsular disorders are addressed separately. Patient education, immediate treatments and other treatment goals for some of the common Temporomandibular disorders are all topics covered in this lecture.
